Commissioning and Briefing

Commissioning a building project is a big decision that involves committing a considerable sum of money. It is essential that you get it right and get the most out of the process. You want to have a team on your side that understands your needs and effectively translates these into your finished building. All this needs to be done to your timescale and, most importantly, to your budget. This guide will help you to navigate through the process.

To make it as easy as possible to access the information you need we have set out this guide as a series of questions and answers. If there is something that is not tackled here please do contact the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), ARB (Architects Registration Board) or you could email or speak to us and we will be happy to help.

Why not create a Visual ‘Ideas Book’?

A collage of images creates an overall mood and will help your designer understand what you want to achieve.

Below are some of the websites we use regularly for residential projects that will hopefully get your creative juices flowing:

www.houzz.com

www.worldarchitecturenews.com (look under the ‘sector’ you are interested in)

www.homebuilding.co.uk/completedprojects

www.freshome.com

www.roomenvy.co.uk

Another tool is:

To make your collages and ideas boards you could use:

www.photocollage.net/collage/

It is very easy to use and ideal for including both images and basic labels/text. You can then easily save these as image files to email or to print out.

Try to organize your sheets by room or theme. For example: exterior/living areas/bathrooms/bedrooms/garden.

These are just some pointers to get you started. We’d be delighted to answer any questions you have and guide you through the process.
